Hybrid Solar system

A hybrid solar system combines the best of both worlds: the convenience of a grid connected system — including the ability to earn Feed-In Tariff credits — with the extra peace of mind of a battery backup. This means that even during a power blackout, you still have electricity.

Hybrid Advantages:

  • Stores & saves solar or cheaper off-peak energy.
  • Allows use of solar energy during peak times (self-use or load-shifting).
  • Power available during a grid outage or blackout –UPS.
  • Enables advanced energy management, i.e. you can temporarily store whatever excess electricity your solar panels in batteries, and put it on the utility grid when you are paid the most for every kWh.
  • Enables energy independence.
  • Reduces power consumption.

Hybrid Disadvantages:

  • Higher cost than on-grid solar. Mainly due to the high cost of batteries.
  • Larger more complex installation requires more room and higher installation cost.
  • Battery life of 6-15 years.
  • Can limit how many appliances you can run at the same time (depending on the type of hybrid inverter and its capability)

Hybrid Solar & Generator System

  • A hybrid system consists of using more than one source of power to produce and run the electrical loads needed for your house or business. The most common form of hybrid system would be the use of Solar (PV) system with battery back-up, along with a gas or diesel-powered engine generator.
  • The reason for this is rarely do households or businesses run their entire electrical load off their Solar (PV) system with battery back-up, because Solar (PV) system with battery back-up would have to meet the electrical loads under the worst case weather conditions. This means you need a larger Solar (PV) system with a larger Battery Back-Up system in order to meet those worst case
  • scenario weather conditions. Therefore it would be more economical if you had a hybrid system with a generator to meet the extra power needs during high peak electrical use times and the electrical needs during cloudy days, while charging the batteries at the same time.
  • Please note, once the batteries are charged they allow you to meet electrical needs without use of the solar (PV) system or generator for a period of time (this depends on the size of your battery system).

A Hybrid Solar (PV) & Generator System works as follows:

  • The photovoltaic (PV) solar modules convert sunlight into direct current (DC) electricity. The (DC) electricity will then flow through a (DC) Disconnect safety device. The (DC) electricity will then flow through a Charge Controller which regulates the charging rate / state of charge for Storage Battery and if the battery is fully charged, the Charge Controller will then bi-pass the battery and send (DC) electricity directly to the Inverter/Charger.
  • The Inverter/Charger receives the (DC) electrical current from either the Charge Controller or the Storage Battery and converts this (DC) electricity into alternating current (AC) electricity which then feeds the Breaker Panel to be dispersed to the appliances throughout the home/business.
  • The Generator when running will supply electricity directly to the Inverter/Charger which will then send the (AC) electricity to the Breaker Panel to be dispersed among the appliances and the Inverter/Charger will also convert some the electrical current to (DC) electricity and send to the Storage Battery, in order to charge the Storage Battery.
